LAMP 2013: Chart Your Tomorrow

By Ejaz Nadeem, MA, CFP, CLU
Director, Special Projects - LAMP

It was truly invigorating to attend GAMA International’s LAMP 2013 in San Diego from March 10 to 13. In all, over 2,500 management professionals from around the world were in attendance. It was the largest ever Canadian turnout at a LAMP conference located in the US. The Manchester Grand Hyatt was an awesome venue and the program was filled with inspiring and motivating speakers.

Morning main platform speakers such as Aron Ralston, whose story was the basis for the movie 127 Hours, made a huge impact, and many enjoyed Tom Hegna’s “Paycheque and Playcheques.” In dozens of afternoon breakout sessions, attendees went more deeply into topics and ended up coming away with new insights. Throughout each day there were opportunities to visit the trade show area and pick up some materials to bring home and use in our businesses.

GAMA International used this opportunity to release the GAMA Foundation’s new, groundbreaking research study, “Firm 2020”, which was designed to help leaders understand how markets and clients, environmental forces, and cultural shifts determine our future. Firm 2020 combines the findings of two independent research studies to show us the powerful trends driving the market of the future.

LAMP 2013 was a record-breaking event for the Canadian contingent on many fronts. In all, 185 Canadians attended — the most ever — and almost everyone attended the Canadian reception. Companies such as Sun Life Financial, Desjardins and Freedom 55 organized management meetings concurrent with LAMP 2013, and helped create a wonderful development opportunity for those managers.

The Canadian reception created quite a stir around the hotel, where proud Canadian delegates displayed their Canadian flags, Advocis lapel pins and GAMA Canada membership badges. Drinks and appetizers were plentiful, and those who attended enjoyed great networking opportunities.

LAMP 2013 was the first time we had eight companies sponsor the GAMA Canada reception. We could not have organized such a great reception without their help. The board of directors of GAMA Canada sincerely thanks all of our sponsors for their support and we look forward to continued strong business relationships in the years to come with: The Co-operators; Standard Life; MedAxio; Self Management Group; Walton; Sun Life Financial; Global Training Consultants Ltd.; and Desjardins Insurance.

On behalf of the GAMA International Canada board, I would like to thank those of you who attended LAMP 2013. We would like you to reserve March 16-19, 2014, on your calendars for LAMP 2014 – Leading for Tomorrow, which will take place in Nashville, Tennessee.
